My Journey with Dermatographism and the Power of Gentle Skincare

My Journey with Dermatographism and the Power of Gentle Skincare

In the summer of 2022, my body went through a major shift. After coming down with a flu or virus, I was prescribed harsh antibiotics. While they may have helped with the immediate illness, they likely wiped out my good gut bacteria as well. By early fall, I started noticing something unusual- raised, itchy welts appearing on my legs. At first, I thought they were a reaction to ragweed or seasonal allergies, but as weeks passed, the welts didn't go away.

Any pressure on my skin, even something as simple as clothing seams or a light scratch, triggered these long, raised rashes that burned and itched intensely. Nothing seemed to help. When I finally went to my doctor, I was told I had dermatographism. Also known as "skin writing," dermatographism is a condition where the skin becomes overly reactive to touch, causing red, raised welts to appear with even minor pressure. Likely caused by the virus I had, the antibiotics and or stress. A histamine overload in my body.

The advice I received was simple: take an antihistamine and keep my skin moisturized. That was it-no real treatment, no long-term solutions, just a suggestion to manage symptoms.

As someone deeply invested in herbal skincare, I knew I needed to take a more holistic approach. Years ago, I had formulated a Pomegranate Body Oil for my husband’s psoriasis, and now, it was time to use it for myself. Incorporating it into my daily routine brought noticeable relief, improving my skin’s health and resilience. But I knew that topical care alone wasn’t enough, I needed to address my body’s internal balance as well.

I began working with naturopathic doctors who helped me understand the deeper connections between gut health, immune function, and skin conditions. With their guidance, I introduced supplements like Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Quercetin, and Rosmarinic Acid into my routine. Spending time in the sun in moderation, breathing fresh air, and engaging in daily bathing rituals became essential parts of my healing process. Connecting with nature in this way reminded me of the body’s incredible ability to restore itself when given the right support.

Through this journey, the importance of skin-safe formulations became even clearer to me. So many bath and beauty products contain harsh chemicals that can further irritate sensitive skin. This experience reinforced my commitment to creating clean, gentle skincare products that nurture the skin rather than overwhelm it.

Now, after two years of careful formulation and personal use, I’m excited to introduce a new facial moisturizer to our collection; Wild Blueberry & Meadowfoam Facial Moisturizer. This product reflects everything I have learned—how crucial it is to listen to your skin, choose ingredients that support its unique needs, and embrace the healing power of nature.

If there’s one thing I hope to share from my experience, it’s this: knowing your skin and what works for you is invaluable. Every individual’s skin is different, and finding the right balance of care, both inside and out, is key to long-term health. Whether it’s through the products you use, the rituals you practice, or the time you spend in nature, true healing comes from gentle, intentional choices.

I invite you to explore the world of natural skincare with me, where simplicity and purity lead the way to healthier, happier skin.
